Forest School

Forest School provides a safe and nurturing environment for children to explore and connect with the natural world, while also developing their emotional intelligence and life skills. It is a unique approach to outdoor learning and promotes curiosity, creativity, and resilience in children, while also instilling a sense of responsibility for the environment.

Autumn 2023

In the Autumn term, Cherry and Oak classes attended Forest School with Will from Muddy Feet. On Thursday afternoons, they walked to Cornbury Park Estate to take part in outdoor activities!

As our project was habitats, lots of learning about the woodland habitat took place. The children explored the area to see what animals lived there. They even built their own minibeast habitats using a matchbox!

A key focus for these sessions was teamwork. They worked together in trust exercises and learnt to build dens as a team. A favourite activity was roasting sausages and marshmallows over the fire they had helped light!

We have looked for signs of spring and investigated our eco-system; what lives here, what grows here and what can we find.

We took part in a bee hunt as Buzz Bee was missing then went looking for Mushrooms and fungi. We found Jelly ear fungi, turkey tail fungi growing from a broken branch and Scarlett elf cup fungi.

We found a long worm and some mini beasts and snowdrops growing. We had fun on the tight rope and made a den using a tool to shave off some of the bark.

We finished with a cup of hot chocolate - yummy!

Spring 2024

This term, Cherry and Oak class are attending Forest School Thursday mornings with Alex from Green Planet.
Our first session was very wet! The children enjoyed a very muddy forest school. They built a den using natural materials and their teamwork skills. Alex showed the children how to build a fire - this kept everyone warm!

Our first session was all about exploring and getting re-aquainted with the forest, remembering our very important forest school rules;

1. Look after yourself

2. Look after eachother

3. Look after nature

We have spent our Autumn term forest school sessions bug hunting, den building, exploring as a team, risk taking and so much more!

We've made animal poo (clay), used tools safely, created medals out of natural materials, worked as a team to build a fire, tested just how weather proof our dens are and even observed little creatures living in the forest.
